Indeed, several recent studies have demonstrated the herb’s vaso-relaxant and anxiolytic (reduced anxiety) effects. In one double blind study, passion flower was shown be as effective as oxazepam in reducing anxiety. Certain studies have also demonstrated passion flower’s capacity to improve GABA, thereby reducing nerve hyperexcitability. In traditional herbal medicine passionflower is touted as being an aphrodisiac. Finally, animal studies have shown cough supressing effects similar to codeine.
